The Code Of Ethics, My Supervisor And I Reviewed At Length...

Social Work Competencies When addressing the NASW code of ethics, my supervisor and I reviewed at length many of the internal issues I have had over the last year in the program. We discussed many issues ranging from Medicare/Medicaid to Immigration. Most of my own issues were internal and these internal issues did not come to play when engaging in the moment with the client. However, many of the issues that were being worked on between the client and myself, the growth of the client stagnated at times and my ability to provide efficient and quality services, I believe also stagnated at times because of this internal struggle. For me, I had to do some soul searching and find some common ground with the client, and look at myself. As I have discussed in previous papers, I truly found the training with Xavier Amador and DBT (Dialectal Behavior Therapy) help me process many of these internal struggles. LEAP focuses on transforming the relationship first. One does not win on the strength of the argument, one wins on the strength of the relationship. With LEAP, one’s opinions are no longer like a lot of hot air and are more like the wind in a sailboat’s sails that moves the person where you want him, to safe harbors. LEAP teaches individuals the genuine understanding, empathy and respect for someone’s point of view, even when you disagree with it, you are free to find common ground on which you can partner (The LEAP Institute, 2016). Marriage What does marriage mean? By definition, marriage is â€Å"the legal union of a man and a woman as husband and wife† (Webster’s Dictionary). Most people claim that they want their marriage to last a lifetime. Because over half of all marriages in the United States end in a divorce, most people lack the understanding of what it takes to stay married. I believe that couples should become more aware of the commitment that they are making when they enter into marriage. Men and women should get to know one another completely before deciding to get married. Becoming a Vegetarian Essay Like many families, mine loved eating meat. Whether it was from a restaurant, fast food, or a home cooked meal, meat was a regular food option. I started doing some research and decided to make a huge change in my life. At two-hundred eighty pounds, I decided to become a vegetarian. A lot of my family and friends disagreed with my decision and found it strange. At first when I told my family they laughed at me and told me I was crazy. They said I would be back to eating meat the next day. When my family noticed that I was serious about this change, they started treating me differently and making sarcastic comments. Even some of my friends would make sarcastic comments and tell me to quit being a vegetarian. Again, I had two choices to make; I could give in to everyone else and go back to eating meat or keep being a vegetarian, because it made me happy and content with my life. First off, my initial choice was to quit being a vegetarian. This is what seemed like everyone wanted. My friends were not very supportive; they said meat was too delicious for a sane person to give up. They would put meat up close my face a tease me telling me to eat it. One of my friends even questioned my manhood by saying, â€Å"You are not a man if you do not eat meat. This is a completely biased opinion; they were behaving like ignorant children. Most of the time when they would start with their childish comments, I would just shrug and tell them to shut up and then we would continue talking about something else. They kept at it, and made me feel like Arnold Spirit in The Absolutely True Dairy Of A Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. In the novel Arnold is having a fight with his best friend Rowdy because Rowdy is mad that Arnold is switching schools. Arnold says â€Å"My heart broke into fourteen pieces, one for each year that Rowdy and I had been best friends†(Alexie 52). In other words, Arnold was taking an emotional toll from his fight with his best friend Rowdy. When my friends would make their jokes and idiotic comments, at first it did not bother me because we all joke around with each other. But these jokes and comments were recurring over and over and over. They started to take a toll on me and I found myself isolating myself from them. I missed them and that’s why I contemplated quitting being a vegetarian and going back to eating meat. Next, my second choice was to keep being a vegetarian and ignore what people would say. I’ll admit when I first started being a vegetarian, it was tough but after two weeks when I started to receive the benefits of not eating meat everything changed. I felt amazing; I had more energy. I was not tired all the time. Even my grades went up because I was no longer falling asleep in class. Blemishes on my skin were starting to go away. I started losing weight. Also being an animal person I was thrilled no animals were being killed on my behalf. Altogether collectively, I felt like a new and improved individual. And yet my family and friends were in the sidelines telling me to quit. In â€Å"The Good Daughter,† by Caroline Hwang she too is having trouble with pleasing herself or her parents; she says â€Å"I know many of my friends who had to choose between pleasing their parents or being true to themselves† (Hwang 14). In other words, she knows people who also had to choose between what their parents wanted and what they wanted. As for my family, they also came around and stopped with the sarcastic comments. They even like some of the vegetarian meals I prepare. Now weighing two-hundred thirty pounds; since I started my vegetarian life style I have lost a total of sixty pounds. I am much more active I run and go hiking. I have a great relationship with my family and friends. I feel better than ever and I have found myself to be a lot happier than I used to be. Vegetarianism is a life changing experience that I would recommend to anyone. Furthermore, this experience has taught me that people should not sacrifice their happiness for what others might say because in the long run you will be a happier individual. Stand up for what is right even if no one is standing. If I had a chance, I would not do things differently because even though I went through what seemed like hell, I came out stronger and standing taller than ever before with a new outlook on life. It has been nine months being a full-fledged vegetarian and I honestly could not ask for more. I am in a great place in my life and I will continue to better myself.

Entry 4: The Bad Impact of Watching Tv for Children Do you love watching TV? Everybody love to watch TV, including children. Children spend more time to watch TV than doing anything else. Within a week they can watch TV about 170 hours. Because watch TV is not so bored like reading book. And they also can absorb many information from TV that is not derived from other media. But on the other side, there are many TV program that give bad influent to the children. Increasing obesity and ruining their eyes are the bad impact of watching TV for children. The first is increasing obesity. Research shows that children who often watch TV will snacking between meals, and eating foods that are advertised on TV and also tend to influence their parents to buy these foods. Besides that sitting for hours in front of the TV screen will make the body do not move and reduce the metabolism, so fat stacked, not burned and eventually lead to obesity. And the second is ruining their eyes. Television emits blue light that also produced by the sun. But its blue light is not same as ultraviolet light. Blue light did not make the eyes automatically blink. So, the blue light goes straight into retina without filter anymore. If a child watches more than 2 hours of TV in a day, especially at night, he or she is more likely to suffer from irregular sleep patterns, troubles in going to sleep accompanied by unexplainable dreams and nightmares. Apart from this, excessive TV viewing is also linked to violence, impaired academic performance and less time for play. *************** I think that watching too much TV has produced several bad effects on society. These bad or negative effects are damaging family and children. In my opinion, the worst effect has resulted in family not communicating much anymore. Parents and children just watch silently rather then sharing their thoughts and experiences. This means that children are learning behaviors from TV, not from their parents. In addition, watching too much TV has resulted in lower level of physical health among children. These days they don’t get enough exercise. In stead of playing sports, children just sit at home and watch them on TV. Entry 5: The benefits of international marriages Nowadays many international marriages occur not only in Korea but also around the world. But Koreans think of themselves as just one ethnic family. With the number of men increasing disproportionately to that of women, the number of international marriages has increased and most are arranged marriages with people who live in underdeveloped countries. Because of this, arranged marriages with people who live in other countries are looked down upon. However, this is not good for Korea in this age of globalization. International marriages have a lot of benefits. Eight years ago, my brother went to India to study. After five years, he brought his girlfriend to Korea and plans to marry her. Because of this, my brother often makes me call her. I learn not only English but also Hindi by calling her. She also learns Korean by calling me. At first, I had concerns about communication between my brother and his girlfriend, but it is not a problem because they communicate using both English and Chinese. I can use English and Hindi by talking with them, so international marriages can help you learn other languages. Secondly, I have learned not only Hindi but also the culture of India while talking with my brother and his girlfriend. I can understand many thin gs about India directly from them. For example, some Indian cultural practices include eating food with the right hand and performing toilet business with the left hand. There are many animals on the roads and a variety of spices used in the food. Five years ago, I had a chance to visit India for volunteer service. Although I went there with many people, I was probably one of the only who accepted Indian culture quickly. While many people had a difficult time eating food with their hands, I knew how to live there thanks to my brother’s girlfriend’s advice. I could also extend my sight about the world and understand other countries well. As we approach the global age, experience that increases world knowledge is important and international marriages can help in this regard. Thirdly, many people talk about their children after international marriages. In Korea, many people say that a multicultural family’s children may have difficulty, but I disagree. Recently I have worked as an assistant in the Global Multicultural Bridge Program supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. I teach and also play with about 30 multicultural children. At first I thought that many multicultural children had difficulty living in Korea, but many of them are exuberant, self-confident and very creative. One of them comes from a Chinese mother and a Korean father. He had a good command of Korean and Chinese and got along with many friends. He is not the only one. Many children from different cultures make friends with each other. I realized that a multicultural child could learn about both cultures and languages from their parents and it would be advantageous for the child. When my brother said, â€Å"I will marry an Indian girl,† someone said to him, â€Å"Are you going to marry an Indian girl not a Korean girl? † But my brother said to her, â€Å"Why should countries contribute to the love between a man and a woman? There are little problems and international marriages have a lot of benefits. † If you marry a person from another country, you can learn a lot of things. International marriages will bring a lot of benefits for you and your family. If you look down on international marriages, then you need to change your thinking. Entry 6: The Advantages and the Disadvantages of Studying Abroad Nowadays, many people prefer to study abroad for different reasons. There are both advantages and disadvantages regarding this . On one hand, some people find studying abroad very fulfilling and useful for the future development of their life. . Studying abroad means not only to be in a whole new cultural environment, but also people get to meet new people. Meeting new people enriches ones own knowledge about new ideas, beliefs and traditions. In many cases a persons mind broadens which makes them understand the global community better. Moreover, people can make lots of new friend. On the other hand, some people face challenges in adjusting properly to a whole new environment. It is not easy to be away from. They may suffer hardship in terms of communicating with people, having to adjust to new types of food or they may feel lonely from time to time. Also, it is quite hard for people who study and work at the same time to support themselves. Sometimes there arent many jobs part-time for students. ******************** Almost every student around the world wishes to pursue his or her education. However, every issue has its pros and cons. In order to making a better decision, one has to explore different aspects of a plan. Studying abroad lets you experience things you have never faced them before. It gives you the opportunity to communicate with different people who have different religions and speak different languages. This will improve your social skills. In addition, when you graduate from a university in a foreign country, It will make you more prestigious. In work life and in your personal life, It will bring more respect for you. To them, you are a person who experiences a different world with different inhabitants. Needless to say, this prestige will help you to find jobs with more salaries. On the other hand, when you leave your hometown and migrate to another country to continue your study, some obstacles may show up. For one thing, you must be away from your family and your intimate friends for a while. No doubt, your relationship will fade away if you dont try to keep in touch with them. Moreover, you are exposed to an environment where everybody else acts and behaves different from what you have learned before. They also expect you to express yourself using their culture. Furthermore, your costs most likely are higher and your income is less than in your country. Because you are a foreigner to these new people, you barely find an appropriate job with a high salary at first. All in all, going abroad in order to continue the education has some advantages and disadvantages. After a thorough consideration of merits and demerits of it, I decide to put all my vigor and pursue my education abroad. Entry 8: What Are the Benefits of Part-Time Jobs for Students? Taking on a part-time job while pursuing a degree is hard work, but the benefits are typically greater than the amount of a paycheck. Students who work during their college careers may have better time-management skills than their counterparts. They must understand responsibility and apply it to their daily lives. They earn money that can be used for fun or for tuition, while gaining experience in the workplace that will be attractive to future employers after graduation. Money Simply put, students who hold down part-time jobs will have more money than they would have otherwise. As they come into adulthood, earning an income can boost their confidence and allow them to have some fun within the limits of their paychecks. Some students need to work through school to afford tuition. Others will set the money aside to pay back student loans. Still, the money will be theirs to spend as they wish, and they may appreciate it more because they worked for it. Budgeting Students earning their own money get lessons on spending wisely. They may be less likely to spend their hard-earned money frivolously and learn to delay gratification to pay for necessities, such as text books and rent. At the same time, they can save for non-essential purchases, such as a car. Time Management Students taking on a job on top of their studies will have less free time than non-working students. When working students have to measure out their time, they tend to be better planners as they make sure they complete every task expected of them on deadline. They learn to weigh their priorities, sometimes skipping fun activities to finish their responsibilities. This prepares them for life after school when excuses and tardy work will be frowned upon. Experience Often, students work jobs that introduce them to their preferred career after school is over. This allows them to gain important introductory experience in the business and begin networking with those in that field. Even students who work in places not connected to their majors will look more impressive to potential employers. Theyll have some kind of work experience on their resumes to start, and the fact that theyve been able to hold a job while a school attests to their level of maturity, responsibility and time management. Employers look for employees who understand the work environment and work well as part of a team. Having a part-time job shows that the student is at least somewhat accustomed to the professional world, which will make the transition that much easier. Entry 8. Advantage and Disadvantages College Student Doing Part Time Jobs Nowadays,an increasing number of college students are taking part-time jobs for many different reasons. Actually,there are both advantages and disadvantages doing so. Generally speaking,college students can benefit a lot from part-time jobs. First,with the development of society and economy,students are getting higher education,as a result of which,the family are under the economic pressure. Taking a part-time job,in this point,students can pay a part of their living cost,and at the same time relieve their parents’ burden. Second,it also needs communication skills when you are taking an interview to get the job,as there are many other competitors. If you fail to take the first job,you will take efforts improving youself to win the next. Third,doing part-time jobs is not only a process of self-development,but also a process of experiencing social life,which will contribute to their job-searching in the future. And at last,they are making their college life colourful by having various part-time jobs and meeting people from different industries. However,there are also disadvantages. Students doing part-time jobs are busy running between the working place and their school. As a result,they get tired, and even skip classes to have a sleep after hard working. It must influence their study to some extent. Moreover,their health will get worse in the long run.. Take a friend of mine for example she once skipped three classes to meet her boss,spending nearly four hours on the way. When she came back,she was worn out with insignificant information taken from her boss. It’s totally a waste of time and energe. In conclution,nothing is perfect. So is taking part-time jobs. But one can do his best to reduce the disadvantages. Here are my suggestions:keep the balance between work and study(after all,studying is always important to students);do not take too many part-time jobs,just keep them in your ability;dont be exausted,and stop to take a breath whenever you feel tired†¦ Entry 9: Advantages and Disadvantages of Modern Technology From day to day, our world has been changed gradually form one condition to another. The revolution of new ideas always comes up to the minds of every person, especially the idea to improve technology which people need to make the living better. As the result, modern technology has been bringing people certain advantages such as ways for fast communication, the improvement of traveling, and good health care medical treatment. However, loneliness, world destruction weapons, pollution, and sameness of lifestyle are brought by modern technology, too. For the plus side, we can get the fast ways of communication through modern technology, without it everything will be the same. Nowadays, people can get hot news from any parts of the world very quickly by using E-mail and Internet. Moreover, telephone-local or/and oversea is playing a key role for people to communicate to with each other. Next, modern technology brings us the convenience of traveling form one place to the other faster than before. Now, we have aircraft that can make journey shorter, for example, before if you wanted to go to France (form Cambodia), you could not go by train or plane. But now people spend only 10 hours to travel from, Cambodia to France by direct flight these days. So, all transportation means invented with the support of technology really brings people easiness of traveling. Moreover, medical treatment has been going well for a long period of time with the help of modern technology. These days, most of the hospitals are using modern technology as the assistance for the operation, for example. Some doctors use new machines to produce medicine which effectively cures people and prolongs the life expectancy around the world. In addition, the discovery of x-ray enables doctors to treat some kinds of diseases. However, modern technology doesnt automatically bring the good things but some bad points. The booming of industrialization and development causes pollution to our world. For example, the smoke for all kinds of vehicles affects the air, especially ozone layer. As the result, people suffer illness like cancers. Next, some people use modern technology to create the negative things of the mankind. They create world destruction weapons such as nuclear and atomic bombs. These weapons cause a huge ruin for human beings if we use them in the wrong ways/ For example, the terrorists use grenades to attack honest people who have different tendency from their groups. Furthermore, modern technology brings loneliness to old people in some countries. In England, old people are left at the government homes that make them feel isolated from their off-springs. This is because. their sons and daughters are busy with their works in new world and forget them. Last, sameness of lifestyle becomes to the mind of all people. Before people had different cultures and traditions like the way wearing the clothes or building. But people, now tend to build the same models of house and wear the same fashion of clothes. To conclude, although modern technology brings us some goods benefits, it also gives a lot of bad results. So, to make our world prosperous, we should use the modern technology in the good ways and find the effective solutions to the bad result. Of course, technology may have concerns about the pollution and environmental problems. But overall most people feel that technology has benefited us immensely. Therefore let us go deeper to analyze that modern technology has increase material wealth, but not happiness on our society: Firstly, modern technology makes peoples life boring, after working time people often sitting by their computer to play games or reading some information on internet. That means they do not refresh their mind and by accident they turn their own into slave of modern technology. It can make life better but it can cause you disease or stressed also. Second, modern technology has improved communication technology between cultures. With modern communication technology such as TVs, phones and computer, internet, you can see what people at the other end of the world is doing, but it can cause us some problem when speak through the phone a lot you will feel not better or headache cause by radioactive and your eye also have problem if you watch TV many hour in a day. And with a modern car, motor and airplane, we can travel to everywhere of the world. This will help us to know the other culture of the world, and you will learn to appreciate the cultural difference of people from different part of the earth. In conclusion, for the reasons above I think that modern technology can’t decide the happiness, it can provide people living standard but not happiness. Entry 11: Marriage foundation of the family With regards to marriage the Compendium explains that the family is founded on the free choice of spouses to unite themselves. The institution of marriage, while it is regulated by human institutions and laws, is, even more importantly, a partnership established by God and endowed with its own laws. Marriage’s divine character, and the natural right to marriage, places limits on what society can legitimately do in regulating marriage. The dignity and specific characteristics of marriage must be safeguarded. The fundamental characteristics of marriage are: totality, in which the spouses give themselves to each other mutually; unity, created by the union of the couple; indissolubility and fidelity, which a definitive mutual self-giving requires; and fruitfulness, to which marriage is open. An important part of marriage is the transmission of life through the birth and nurturing of children. Nevertheless, number 218 adds that procreation is not the only reason for marriage and that when a couple is unable to have children the value of communion between the spouses remains. The Compendium also deals with the sacrament of marriage, explaining that it unites couples within the Church according to God’s plan. In fact, the sacrament makes the family a sort of domestic Church in which the family is called to be a sign to the world. And the love of the married couple is also raised to a new level by the sacramental grace. Love and the family The role of love within marriage and the family is another theme dealt with in the text. The family is a place where communion is brought about, and thanks to love each person is recognized, accepted and respected. Love, affirms the Compendium, is essential for human beings. But marital love is more than just emotions or sexual expression. It is a full and total gift, marked by unity and fidelity. Moreover, the nature of conjugal love requires the marital union to be stable. The introduction of civil divorce has fueled a relativistic vision of the marriage bond and can be termed a plague on society. For those couples who have divorced and remarried the Compendium adds that the Church does not abandon them. She prays for them and encourages them in the difficulties that they encounter in the spiritual life, sustaining them in faith and hope. (No. 226) Nevertheless, they cannot receive the Eucharist until they obtain reconciliation through the sacrament of penance. The text also rejects attempts to redefine marriage through the introduction of new concepts that see gender as dependent merely on social and cultural factors. Physical, moral and spiritual difference and complementarities are oriented towards the goods of marriage and the flourishing of family life. It is therefore incongruous to demand that same-sex unions receive the status of marriage. At the same time the Compendium calls for homosexuals to be fully respected in their human dignity, but also encouraged to exercise chastity. The Compendium is also critical of de facto unions as they are based on a false conception of the freedom to choose. Marriage is more than a simple agreement to live together but is a social instrument and the principal means for helping each person to grow in an integral manner A sanctuary of life Another section addresses themes related to life matters within the family. Conjugal love is by its nature open to the acceptance of life. This is particularly the case for Christian families, that by virtue of the sacrament should be witnesses of the gospel of life. The Compendiumacknowledges the weight of this responsibility, but encourages couples to take decisions based on a generous acceptance of life. Excluded, as being morally unacceptable, are anti-life means such as abortion, sterilization and contraceptive methods. Couples, however, may decide to use methods based on periodic abstinence to regulate the number of children, based on a consideration of the personal, family and social factors. On the other side of the coin the Compendiumexcludes the idea that parents have a right to children. A desire for children at any cost leads to the use of reproductive techniques that are ethically unacceptable. Nurturing children The Compendium also explains the family’s function in bringing up children, a completely original and irreplaceable role. (No. 239) The parents’ love is placed at the service of their children and animates all educational activity. Parents have both a right and a duty to educate their children, which the state should respect. The text also insists that to carry out this function parents have a right to found educational institutions and that the state should provide economic support to these non-public schools. The primary role of the parents in education is particularly the case when it comes to religious and moral formation. But it must also be respected in the area of sexual education. TheCompendium stresses the importance of linking sexual education with an instruction in moral norms and the human values. Children’s dignity must also be protected, first of all by protecting their right to be born within a real family. As well, the Compendium draws attention to problems such as child labor, lack of health care and sexual exploitation. The concise and complete treatment of the family in the Compendium provides a useful resource for pastors and lay people interested in knowing more about the position of the Church regarding many of the fundamental issues touching marriage and family. The importance of family A person who is called successful in life is a person who has a happy family. Family is important to everyone in the world. Family isnt whose blood you have. Its about who you care about, my dad once told me. Each person has a different and unique family in their heart. Deep inside me, family holds an unchangeable place. The strong role which family plays, familys communication, and its support are the three main reasons that make family so important. Have you ever thought about what makes you lucky? Many people believe that their successes and talents cause them to be lucky. Personally, I believe having a happy family with both a mother and a father is my luck. Dictionary explains family as a fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children. To me, family is those who support and care for me. They watch out for me and are there when I need them. They also help me reach goals that I have set for yourself. Battlefield of the Scripture Catarino Zepeda English 261 February 25, 2019 In the book â€Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn†, slavery is a relevant part of society because during this time slavery was deemed a God given right. However, the cause of nearsightedness of scripture has led a conflict in the society during the time this book was written. People often take the Word of God out of context, and they use whatever â€Å"scripture† for their cause to justify their actions. However, one is to suspend judgement and look into the context of why the testimony was written, so the precept can influence the person rather than the person influencing God’s Word. At the time this book was written, I doubt anyone had ever read the book of Philemon. In a nutshell, the book of Philemon is about a runaway slave, Onesimus, encountering the apostle Paul and becoming born again. Paul would send Onesimus back to his owner Philemon; however, Philemon would receive Onesimus not as a slave but as a dear brother in Christ per Paul’s request. F or the majority of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn the main protagonist Huck is in company with a runaway slave named Jim.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1885, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was first published. Unfortunately, at the time this book was written slavery was a prevalent part of American society. According to Judith Weisenfeld in her book review of Hell without Fires: Slavery, Christianity, and the Antebellum Spiritual Narrative, â€Å"Yolanda Pierce uses antebellum African American spiritual narratives to explore how conversion to Christianity functioned for many African Americans as a means of refuting religious justifications of slavery, resisting the institutions various means of dehumanizing black people, and extending beyond the individual experience of conversion to evangelize others.† Somehow these â€Å"Christians† at the time this book was written, believed that they were saving black people by putting them into slavery. No one can make a person become a Christian. The decision is up to the person whether or not they want to give their lives to Ch rist, and it is up to them to receive Him as Lord and Savior. One has to respect the decision the person makes. Jesus said â€Å"if anyone desires to come after me, let him first deny himself and pick up his cross daily and follow me.†Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚      Then the group of people who practiced Christianity would be more educated and well-off people like that of Miss Watson. On the other hand, characters like Huck and Jim who were deemed less â€Å"sivilized†, and would disregard Christianity because they believed Christianity took more precedence in the expired than the living. Throughout the book, Huck would dismiss the necessity of Christianity because of constantly failed prayer request. Conversely, at the end of the book, Huck would pray to God to condemn his soul to hell if anything happened to Jim. As he tried to pray, Huck was wavering because he felt his heart was not right.   In the 31st chapter of the book, Huck would state, â€Å"So I was full of trouble, full as I could be; and I says, I’ll go and write a letter- and then see if I can pray†¦All right, then, I’ll go to hell†.   Huck tried to send a letter to Miss Watson concerning Jim whereabouts, but he could not follow through. Also, the binaries of good and evil are prevalent in this book; however, good and evil differ in the eyes of different characters. The white colored â€Å"Christians† were deemed â€Å"good† people. On the other hand, the colored people were deemed â€Å"evil† people. For example, when heaven and hell were being discussed, Huck would imagine â€Å"good† people like Miss Watson to end up there. Huck believed that well-off, important and stringent people went to heaven. In contrast, Huck believed that hell was where all the cool people went. This too has also made Huck less interested in Christianity. In chapter 1 of the book Huck would state, â€Å"All I wanted was to go somewheres; she was going to live so as to so to the good place. Well, I couldn’t see no advantage in going where she was going, so I made up my mind I wouldn’t try for it.† In addition, when the opportunity presented itself to turn Jim back into slavery, Huck would be torn within himself. For instance, when Huck was pretending to be contaminated with tuberculosis while being interrogated by two slave owners. Huck decided to hide Jim rather than turn Jim back into slavery. At this moment, Huck had an inward conflict because he believes he did the wrong thing. Huck considered the slave owners to be â€Å"good† people, and slaves as being evil people. The influence of slavery helped form Huck’s perspective on colored people. At the end, Huck would say that he knew Jim was a white person inside after staying with a wounded Tom. This is implying that white people are good and colored people are bad. According to Cassander L. Smith in her â€Å"Niggers† or â€Å"Slaves†, Literary Criticism states, â€Å"Even though Jim has done the right thing, illustrating that he can think rationally and compassionately, it does not do much to c hange his social status. The other characters still refer to him as nigger, unable- or unwilling- to read his selfless act in terms of his humanity.†    In conclusion, we discussed some of the causes of why slavery was a prominent part in society at the time this book was written. Also, we discussed some of the groups of characters whom Christianity influenced in this book. The shortsightedness of scripture has led to slavery in society during this time. Does The Bible condone slavery? One would state that slavery is allowed in the Law. However, the entirety of the Law is actually pointing to Jesus. Yes, the Law allows one to have a slave for seven years; however, on the seventh year he is to be released. The slave is taken to the doorpost of the gate of the city. He has the choice to be free or remain a slave. If he chooses to remain a slave then his ear would be pierced signifying him becoming a bondservant. On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus would choose to become that bondservant, and later He would be pierced on a cross. The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve others, and to give His life as a ransom for many. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a product of wrong use of scripture, for these â€Å"Christians† served God with their mouths, but their hearts were far from Him. Definition and Examples of Information Content In linguistics and information theory, the term information content refers to the amount of information conveyed by a particular unit of language in a particular context. An example of information content, suggests  Martin H.  Weik, is the meaning assigned to the data in a message (Communications Standard Dictionary, 1996). As Chalker and Weiner point out in the Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar (1994), The notion of information content is related to statistical probability. If a unit is totally predictable then, according to information theory, it is informationally redundant and its information content is nil. This is actually true of the to particle in most contexts (e.g. What are you going . . . do?). The concept of information content was first systematically examined in Information, Mechanism, and Meaning  (1969)  by British  physicist and information theorist  Donald M. MacKay. Greetings One of the essential functions of language is to enable members of a speech community to maintain social relations with one another, and greetings are a very straightforward way of doing this. How Literature Reflects Communities Essay Authors have historically used various literary works to reflect the societies in which their live. To this end, the actions of characters in literary works reflect existing social concepts whereas the surrounding society’s behavior mirrors on specific characters’ behaviors. In essence, societies and communities are normally depicted as mutually affecting each other. Notable cases of literary works in which such reciprocal interaction is demonstrated are the three short stories namely: William Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily; Flannery OConnor’s Good Country People; and Toni Cade Bambara’s The Lesson. To illustrate, through his A Rose for Emily story, Faulkner describes Emily Grierson as being negatively affected by her surrounding society. In turn, Emily’s actions negatively impact of her compatriots. Likewise, through the Good Country People story, OConnor describes the character named Joy Hopewell as negatively impacting on the people around her. Consecutively, the society in which Hopewell lives demonstrates an attitude that negatively affects her. In a similar version, Toni Cade Bambara’s The Lesson story illustrates the character called Miss Moore being negatively affected by her surrounding society. In response, Miss Moore demonstrates behaviors and attitudes that negatively impact on her compatriots. All in all, OConnor through Good Country People Faulkner through A Rose for Emily – as well as Bambara – through The Lesson short stories describe their protagonists as reciprocally affecting and being affected by their societies in a negative way. For example, in Bambara’s The Lesson story, Miss Moore’s condescending opinion towards her compatriots especially the children with which she spends most of her time attracts disproval from the surrounding community. Consequently, both the children as well as the adults disrespect Miss Moore. For instance, Bambara notes that ‘the grown-ups (talk) †¦.. when †¦. behind her back like a dog,’ thus showing utter disrespect for Miss Moore (). Moore’s irritatingly patronizing nature is evident when she ‘looks at’ her students ‘ like she readin tea leaves’ (). The author thus presents a picture of an individual and the surrounding society mutually affecting each other in a negative manner. Likewise, through the A Rose for Emily story, Faulkner shows that Emily’s unbecoming behavior invites rude responses from her compatriots. For instance, Emily demonstrates impoliteness when she demonstrates stubbornness towards her society’s pleas that she pays taxes. She even firmly removes the society’s representatives from her house. Abruptly summoning Tobe her manservant Emily instructs him to ‘Show these gentlemen out’ (). In reaction, the society demonstrates indifference towards her as is evident from the narrator’s assertions that the society does not know of Emily’s sickness. To this end, the narrator remarks ‘We did not even know she was sick’ (). Similarly, through his Good Country People story, OConnor depicts Joy Hopewell as a character who demonstrates haughtiness towards her compatriots notably Mrs. Freeman and Hopewell ‘s mother the result being that she becomes painfully alienated from her society. For example, because she is educated , Hopewell mocks all people around her as is evident from her remark that her mother is ‘bloated, rude, and squint-eyed’ (). In reaction, society alienates Hopewell , thus making her to beg her mother to wholesomely accept her. A deeply remorseful Hopewell cries out to the mother saying ‘like I am’ take me (). In conclusion, the issue of individuals negatively reacting with their surrounding communities is clearly evident through the 3 stories, Good Country People, The Lesson, as well as A Rose for Emily. Good Country People’s Hopewell suffers segregation due to her arrogant attitude towards her compatriots. Likewise, A Rose for Emily’s Emily suffers segregation due to her condescending view of her society. Lastly, The Lesson’s Miss Moore’s is disrespected by society owing to her attitude of viewing her compatriots as being unknowledgeable.

The Influence Ineffective Coping Has on Adolescent Development Essay

Introduction Adolescence is the stepping-stone to adulthood. During this developmental milestone individuals critically develop physically, mentally, emotionally and sexually (Wetherill & Tapert, 2013). Amidst these changes adolescents develop higher cognitive skills and begin to establish their sense of self. This developmental process can be hindered when the adolescent experiences a loss of a loved one. Currently limited research has been conducted on the physical response of the adolescent population. Coping strategies identified to be used by adolescents included avoidance behaviours and self-medicating. The following paper investigates the influence ineffective coping has on adolescent development. Areas that will be comprehensively evaluated include: the physical responses of bereavement, avoidance and efforts to self-medicate. Physical Responses Restlessness, concentration difficulties and sleep disturbances act as physical stressors on the body and contribute to an adolescents’ ability to successfully facilitate the bereavement process. A study assessing the implementation of a Body Awareness Programme, targeted adolescents to develop their understanding of the bereavement process and physical symptoms (Bugge, Haugstvedt, Rokholt, Darbyshire & Solvi, 2012). The authors desired to introduce strategies that would support bereaved teens and offer possible techniques to effectively cope with the circumstance (Bugge et al., 2012). Rationale for Ptlls

Rationale My topic will be based around Employability Skills: Why is a CV so important, what should it include and how to put your CV together. I am currently not in a teacher/tutor role right now but I work in recruitment and I find and place suitable candidates within the training and WBL arena. As this is what I currently do for my job I am comfortable delivering this subject to a group of learners. My aim is for my learners To Understand the Importance of Putting Together a Good CV and How to Do it.My learners will make up of 3 of my fellow colleagues from my PTLLS course and will be delivered on the 26th November in a classroom at college. Prior to the session I will prepare a PowerPoint presentation which will include aims and objectives of the session, the CV examples, the group task and the final outcome. I will back up this presentation on a USB stick. I have chosen this resource to enable the learners to engage immediately and digest the subject matter whilst I am introduci ng myself, the aims and objectives.By having a visual resource at the beginning of the session the learners can start to digest the information whilst I am delivering it aurally. This will appeal to the two preferred learning styles and gain interest and engagement from the start. The PowerPoint will keep me and my delivery on track and not veering off the subject. The aim and objective will also be written on my white board or flip chart which will remain up during the whole session. This is to remind the learners of the subject and they can refer to it during the group work task.I will arrange the room so the group can sit together and can see the presentation and can see the whiteboard. I will ask the group to leave their bags and coats at the back of the room to avoid any trip hazards or distractions. As the group already know each other I will not need to introduce an ice breaker. I do not yet know whether they have any special requirements. In preparing for my micro teach I dr aw on information and research around my current employment.I will research the criteria that are needed for a CV, what the prospective employers want to see a CV and the most effective format to use. I will prepare in advance a handout of a good and bad example of a CV. I will also prepare a list of key descriptive words to use in a CV in case we finish too quickly. I will begin my session by introducing myself, my aims and objectives. I will ask if anyone has any previous experience in putting together a CV and if so how long ago it was. The objectives of the session: 1. To listen to the introduction and information about the session. . Understand the importance of a good CV 3. Discuss the good and bad aspects of a sample CV 4. Identify skills and abilities when writing a CV 5. Answer questions and recap. I will introduce the subject by asking questions about their previous experience of writing a CV, was it short, long, bulleted or paragraphed? I will ask them why a CV is so impo rtant and how they can create a good first impression. By asking these open questions I will be drawing on the learner’s previous experience and getting them involved.I can introduce English functional skills here as they will need to ensure it’s written and presented properly with no grammar or spelling mistakes. I will explain that the next task is a group work session where they will be given a copy of a poorly written CV as a handout. They will need to identify the good parts of the CV that are relevant and the parts that are not needed. After this period I will ask them to present their findings which I will write up on the flip chart. I will display on my presentation the layout of the preferred style of CV and ask the group if they have any questions.This will enable them to clarify any information or offer any ideas they may have. I will then handout a formatted copy of the original CV and how it should look. I will ask the learners to discuss what is different with this version relay back to me. This will appeal to the different preferred styles of learning, written, aural and reading. I will use everyone’s name when asking or answering a question, I will make eye contact equally and if someone is not involved I will ask them direct or hypothetical questions.I will use the 7 W processes in asking my questions. If I overrun I will use the last previous CV version as a handout for the learners to take with them, if I run out of time I will introduce my Use of Descriptive CV Words doc. I will summarise the session by relating to the aims and objectives on the flip chart and by referring to the handouts for future reference when putting together a CV. I will thank them for their time and tell them the session is over.

How to Reduce Employee Turnover with Motivation Essay

Nowadays, a word is very popular in white collars. It is â€Å"luo ci† in Chinese, which means people leaving their current work without a new job. With the development of society and the improvement of the level of people’s life, the phenomenon of â€Å"luo ci† become more and more common. As we know, the employee turnover of hospitality industry is quite higher than other industries. In 2004, Wildes warned that hospitality would face a significant work force deficit of quality managers in the near future. Not only is there a shrinking labor pool due to other industries attracting our potential managers (i. e. retail, banking, and healthcare) (American Express, 2006), but turnover continues to be a significant problem. High turnover not only causes the hotels lose their good employees and makes the level of service declined, but also increases the costs and expenses of recruitment and training. So, those hotels should take some measures to reduce employee turnover. Through some information, there are four main reasons: salary and welfare, personal development, sense of achievement, and interpersonal relationship. Clark and Estes (2002) suggest that employee turnover may not be purely a function of remuneration but rather of employee motivation. From this sentence, we know employee motivation plays a very important role in hospitality industry and it is an effective way to solve the problem of brain drain. The methods of employee motivation can be divided into two parts: substance incentive and spiritual incentive. According to the reasons of leaving, the management should pay more attention on their employees’ needs and motivate them from material and spiritual. Substance incentive means motivating and encouraging employee by some material, such as salary, welfare, bonus, or penalty. It is the main mode of motivation. Besides, it is the most common motivation mode. A study from a salary survey by Hewitt Associates showed that the human resource department in the hotel groups offering at least one plan of pay to performance rise from 51 per cent in 1991 to 77 per cent in 2003 (Jeffrey Pfeffer, 2007). Except carrying out the necessary substance incentive, the spiritual incentive is especially important, because it is a key factor to improve employees’ career happiness. According to different needs do some different spiritual incentive, such as, empowerment, make a future career development program for employees, making some effective communication and so on. In onclusion, with the improvement of living standard, more and more people begin to pay more attention on their internal happiness and pursuit. Taking substance incentive purely cannot meet the demands of the employees. Therefore, substance incentive and spiritual incentive are equally important and complement each other, are indispensable. And the proper motivation not only can retai n the best employee, but also can improve the productivity. 2. The current situation of personnel in hospitality industry The current situation of personnel in hospitality industry is structural shortage and non-normal loss. And as a labor-intensive enterprise, the turnover of the hospitality industry should be no more than 15%. But a survey from China Tourism Association suggests that the employee turnover in hospitality industry in nearly 5 years are 25. 64%, 23. 92%, 24. 2%, 22. 56%, 23. 41%, and the average turnover rate is as high as 23. 95%(Zheng Lu, 2009). With the widely and increasingly fierce competition, the employee turnover rate always remains high and personnel training and supply of the hotel cannot keep up with the speed of development of hospitality industry. In China, we have learned the foreign hotel management for more than twenty years. And large numbers of hotel managers and service personnel have grown up. Except part of high-quality employees are hired by some foreign companies, there is a good deal of personnel retaining our domestic hotels. Therefore, the problem is whether those good employees can be retained or not. 3. The reasons of brain drain Through researching some information, there are four main reasons that causing people leaving their jobs. They are salary and welfare, personal development, sense of achievement, and interpersonal relationship. 3. Salary and welfare A survey (Zheng Lu, 2009) suggests that in all influence which leads to employees leaving their job voluntarily, the most important influence is relative wages. In recent years, with the rapid development of hospitality industry, the number of hotels is increasing gradually, which lead to the benefit of hotel is not as good as before. Besides, for the price rise, the employees’ salary that most of hotels offer just can supply for their daily living expenses. But the income level in some foreign high-grade hotels is much higher than others. And, lots of employees measure their own value by their salaries. So, after they find another job that can provide a better salary, they maybe choose job-hopping. Thereby, this phenomenon makes the speed of employee turnover up. 3. 2 Personal development People who are committed to their work always have their own purpose. Some people want to get high wages and treatment, while, some people pursue high positions, in order to realize their own value. The fact states that thinking about from personal career development space and view of vision, some employees choose change their job, enter a new work environment, even though the salary of new job is less than before. Although their salary is less than before, they firmly believe that their abilities can get more development and their future is much brighter. However, on the contrary, some people give up their management positions and jump to a condition superior hotel. Their purpose is getting much more high-quality trainings and practices and they expect to gain more wide development space. 3. 3 Sense of achievement A lot of hotels think that the higher education, the stronger ability. Therefore, those hotels always focus on those employees who have high education, and give them higher position and more training, often send them to study and investigate. And those hostellers think that only they can bring benefits for the hotels, while ignore the importance of primary-level organizations. Thus, sometimes, the primary-level employees think their abilities cannot be confirmed and their jobs cannot meet their sense of achievement. Finally, in order to find a leader who can accept their abilities and get sense of achievement, they choose quit their job, and change another one. 3. 4 Interpersonal relationship As we know, the most things working in hotel is dealing with people. Some hotels, especially some state-owned hotels always exist some complex and tensional interpersonal relationship. In state-owned hotels, the employees compete with each other; the awareness of teamwork is weak and only pay attention to personal performance. The employees working in the hotel, especially the front-line service employees, their great workload always make them mental and physical exhaustion. Sometimes, a few of customs purposely make difficulties for them, even insult employees’ personality. It makes employees feel that they cannot get the proper care and respect. Therefore, due to cannot stand the depressive work environment, some employees quit their job and to look for a better work environment. 4. Incentive is an effective way to solve the brain drain As we all know, the high employee turnover will cause the management cost of training and recruitment increasing, and the quality of management and service decreasing. For this reason, how to steady the staff, minimize the employee turnover and then realize the steady development of hotel is a difficult problem to many hotel managers. From some researches, I find that employee motivation is an effective way to solve the brain drain. According to a survey conducted by The Ohio State University (Wilson, 2005), the top ten factors that affect employee motivation included: â€Å"interesting work, good wages, full appreciation of work done, job security, good working conditions, promotions and growth in the organization, feeling of being in on things, personal loyalty to employees, tactful discipline and sympathetic help with personal problems. † And in a word, it should be undertaken from two parts: substance incentive and spiritual incentive. 1 To establish a substance incentive system combining compensation and performance According to Festinger (Turner, 2006), â€Å"rewards would affect the attitude of individuals toward their work and their understanding of why they are working. † Establishing a reasonable and effective substance incentive is one of the most important factors that whether company can retain employees. Practice has proved that substance incentive is an important way that can stimulate employee aggressive and improve employee performance effectively in the hospitality industry. Therefore, how to properly hold substance incentive is very important. First, the company should choose the best employees who performed well through the fair and reasonable employee performance evaluation, and do some financial incentive to them, for example, increasing their salary as a reward. It can make employee feel sense of achievement and realize their own value. Motivating employees by using performance-contingent rewards is a long-established management practice. Pay-for-performance is used to promote two ends. First, it is expected that these systems will motivate employees to increase their effort and thereby their performance. Second, these compensation plans are often introduced to better align the efforts of employees with organizational goals and objectives the belief that performance will lead to reward (instrumentality) (Turner, 2006). However, it is worth to think about the demands of employees. According to their needs give different rewards, rather than simply showering them with undesired gifts. Spending money at a problem is often thought of as a quick fix rather than a long-term solution. Therefore, some people begin to seek cheaper alternatives to replace spending money, and to achieve the same aims, such as do some spiritual incentive. 4. 2 Do some flexible spiritual incentive In addition to make some material incentive to employees, spiritual incentive is very important for employees in hospitality industry. In some situations, too much material incentive will bring some distorting effects, because high bonus will lead to the information or messages blocked with each other. It will directly reflect various aspects of the normal work. In the book Concepts and Skill Building (Certo, 2004) says that,â€Å"Motivating employees requires employers to study the employee’s monetary, physical and psychological needs, because individuals are motivated by a number of items namely intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. † Therefore, only use material incentive is not perfect, and spiritual incentive is necessary to a company. It can roughly be divided into the following kinds. 4. 2. 1 Empowering employees can help them take more responsibility. Employee empowerment is defined as a strategy and philosophy that enables employees to make decisions on their jobs. Sharing the most important goals and direction to your group can motivate people responsible for accomplishing the mission. 3) Trust Your Employees. Trust people can do the right thing, make the right decision. It can make your employees get more confidence and passion. 4) Provide Frequent Feedback. Make frequent feedback so that people know what and how they are doing. Sometimes, the purpose of feedback is reward and recognition (â€Å"Employee Empowerment. † n. d. ). 4. 2. 2 Make a future career development program for employees Nowadays, some people leaving their job just because they cannot see the future in their work. In hospitality industry, the average age of employees is generally young, so most of them always have lots of expectations to their future career. They always want to undertake some challenging jobs, so that achieve their own goals and personal development. While, the most important point to do this is training. Due to the requirements of recruitment in hospitality industry are less than other industry, when some people come into the hotel, they still have none knowledge on the hospitality industry. So, on the one hand, the career development program can help employees have a thorough knowledge of the development of hospitality industry and the demands to the personnel. On the other hand, it can help employees establish their own goals, take advantages of their ability, realize their own value, improve the job satisfaction and sense of belonging and responsibility. From the perspective of hospitality industry, an effective training can help employee improve their professional skills and their mood in their work, so that improve customer satisfaction and hotels market competitive power. From the personal development, an effective program can help people understand their own positioning in their hotels, and establish a practical goal for themselves. In a word, the program is an effective way to help employer find employees’ interest, advantages, and some potential ability and help employees exactly know themselves and improve themselves by proper methods. In order to be successful in today’s challenging economic environment hospitality organizations must demonstrate a commitment to helping their employees learn and develop new skills. This is essential if organizations hope to increase retention and create career growth by promoting from within Lee & Bruvold, 2008). Moreover, employee development programs often signal the degree of investment the organization is willing to make in an employee. From the employees’ perspective, this investment indicates how much the organization supports its employees (Wayne, Shore, & Liden, 2007), genuinely cares about the long-term professional growth of its employees, and values the employees’ contributions. So a good employee development program is very important to the employee turnover. A review of the recent hospitality literature further reveals that employee organizational commitment significantly influences employees’ turnover intentions (Johanson & Cho, 2007) indicating that the more committed or attached an employee is to an organization, the less likely that employee is to leave. And it states that the program has the potential to enhance an employee’s commitment to the organization, so, the program could also reduce turnover in the hospitality industry. 4. 2. 3 Making some effective open communication Open communication is extremely important and considered a top priority by the majority of employees (Honore, 2009). Most of employees often feel their managers and supervisor lack of open communication. This phenomenon causes the employees lack of care from their company and their managers cannot understand their needs, in turn, causing brain drain. Therefore, the managers and supervisors must often talk and listen to their employees. And the simplest way to make an open communication is giving employees the opportunity to ask question. And then obtain an answer to the questions and provide the answers in an honest and timely manner. It will help them avoid some further doubt and misunderstandings with each other. An open communication can create a relaxed and happy working environment for employees. It will reduce the working pressure of employees. In addition, open communication makes managers and employees more understanding with each other and is a good opportunity to enhance relationship between each other and clear the air. An effective communication should be clear, consistent, and correct. It is vital to understanding employee needs and make employee willing to work harder to get better performance. And it can reduce the rate of employee turnover effectively. 5. Conclusion Times change; society change; people’s minds change. More and more people begin to pay more attention t their internal happiness and pursuit, rather than just limited to their salary, position, and other material factors. So companies must conform to the requirement of the times, understand staff needs, and meet their needs from different aspects. In order to retain the employees, companies must make material incentive and spiritual incentive together. The motivational effect of material incentive and spiritual incentive is different. If companies want to motivate their employee effectively, they must take proper measures according to the specific situations. Employee motivation is very crucial to reduce the rate of employee turnover and retain the employees. According to the reasons of people leaving, the hotels mainly make some substance incentive to their employees. But it is not enough to meet employees’ needs, the spiritual incentive is also important for employee to meet their desires and decrease the high employee turnover. There are three main methods to make a spiritual incentive. They are empowerment, open communication, and making employee career development program. Besides, praise and respect the employees are very important. It can make employees become more loyal to their company and maximum the satisfaction of employees. The more satisfied employees feel about their jobs, the less likely they are to leave, which further reduces organizational turnover (Costen, 2010). 6. Summary The hospitality industry is, in every sense of the word, big business. U. S. restaurant industry sales are expected to reach a record $537 billion in 2007, employing 12. 8 million individuals, adding two million new career and employment opportunities in the next decade (NRA, 2007). However, the rate of employee turnover in hospitality industry is very high. Therefore, reduce the rate and retain employees is a pressing concern. The key to keeping employees in hospitality industry is rewarding employees for what they do every day and having an employee-friendly environment where people can feel comfortable bringing their concerns to the manager. Therefore, both substance and spiritual incentives are necessary management methods to motivate employees in the hospitality industry. Substance incentive can provide material demand to employee, while spiritual incentive provides spiritual demand to employee. Most hotel managers always like pay more attention to pay for performance and ignore the role of spiritual incentive, which leads to a high turnover rate and high cost of human source department. However, according to the increasingly higher demands of both employee and customer, non-financial incentive to motivate employee is more and more important. In the hospitality industry, the most common methods of spiritual incentive are empowerment, making future career development program, open communication and praise and respect etc. Their functions are meeting employee’s satisfaction which is defined as a sense of recognition, achievement, responsibility, improvement and promotion, interesting work, and awareness for future development. Through different methods can meet employees’ different needs, it can make employees prefer their job, rather than quit their job. Employee motivation can not only keep the best employee for hotels, but also save cost of training and recruiting. It will improve the competitive power for hotels and make their business better and better.
